Keto diet & bodybuilding
The diet looks a bit odd as it means I will reduce my protein intake.

Anyone got any successful experience of a keto diet?

its for cunts.

thats why its a "diet". anything that excludes certain food groups wont last.

Re: Keto diet & bodybuilding
Fury's "dirty keto" is ridiculous.

i think his weight loss was more to do with starting training again and giving up "18 pints a night".

The diet is just as if not more important.

Bloke a work is doing it, I do agree it is for cunts though.

Re: Keto diet & bodybuilding
to the original point, it depends on what you mean by "bodybuilding".

if you wanna build muscle then you will need a lot of protein, so more atkins than keto?
also carbs are important in muscle building, the most important thing most workout if some fast releasing carbs - like a jam sandwich on white bread.

if you mean getting lean than keto will work if you're doing it in a calorie deficit.

Re: Keto diet & bodybuilding
Cut out carbs entirely, cut your calories right back to 800 a day and drink water like a fish. After about four or five days you'll stop feeling the starvation and begin burning fat. Fuck with it, and you'll burn muscle. Stay in this zone and you'll lose several pounds a week until you reach your target of 2 stone, 4 stone, 6 stone or whatever. It does work and will work unless you veer off - it's just biochemistry. You'll finf it hard to do much exercise during the diet other than a daily stroll.

However, at some point you'll definitely need to stop the lunacy and start eating a balanced diet again - albeit one without any crap, including much in the way of refined carbs. You'll put on half a stone immediately, but can then sustainthe the rest of the loss if you've taken the time during the diet to actually plan life long changes in the way you eat.

But if you don't have an exit strategy or long-term plan of better nutrition coupled with exercise, it'll all go back on eventually. The people who say it doesn't work and you'll put it all back on are sort of half right. It certainly does work, but you need to change your lifestyle afterwards.

So, it will help you shed pounds quickly, but it's not sustainable in the long run. You'll need to spend the painful period of dieting developing a long-term strategy for eating healthier and being active. But perhaps just shedding the weight is all you need to get a bit more active, in which case it could work for you.

Bloke a work done this for about 2 weeks, and because of the lack of carbs his energy levels were terrible and got what they call Keto flu. He was in bed for a week because of it.

Lots of those shake diets rely on keto. They give you controlled calories, macros, vitamins and micro nutrients and you just about get through it. You'll definitely, definitely lose weight, but you won't feel terriifc - especially if you cut corners on water and sleep.

Basically what Fivetide said.

I went on a keto diet last September for 3 weeks and it worked well in terms of losing weight and fat around the tummy.

No energy level loss (I'm 56, cycle weekly and pretty fit.)

However, I don't body build!

Re: Keto diet & bodybuilding
No experience with body building, so take this for what it is worth.

I have been on very low carbs, especially simple carbs for years because of a history of diabetes in my family.

I have eliminated them altogether at times and withdrawal can be very real. But overall I feel much better without sugar or "white foods". That works for me and my health.

That all said, some of the more educated people I have read consider keto a good short term way to lose weight but the long term effects of it are not known. So maybe not a permanent lifestyle choice.

Re: Keto diet & bodybuilding
I did ketogenic diet for six months about 2 years ago, and have just recently started again (2 weeks in). Great for weight loss. Gave up last time as I couldn't stop losing weight, went from 96kgs to 82kg. I like food and what I like about keto is the appetite suppression. After a couple of weeks I already want to eat less and a higher protein in take keeps you full for longer as apposed to a high carb diet
Any weight you lose in the first 2-3 weeks is water retention not fat loss, if you get back on the carbs this weight will quickly return. Body takes 12 weeks to become fully fat adapted (body burns fat as its primary source of energy}. Between weeks 5-7 your suffer an energy dip but this does return. Body builders prefer to have glycerin in their bodies before working out as it gives them explosive power that you lose on keto. Many use a targeted keto diet (tkd) and take upto 25g of easily digestible carbs before each workout. Carbs will get consumed during the workout and body stays in ketosis. I'm a triathlete not a body builder so have not had alot of experience of tkd.

Re: Keto diet & bodybuilding
A lot of cross fitters do Keto diets.

Most bodybuilders have a very strict diet and are eating high amounts of carbs off season before the usual 12 week cut.

Depends on your goals. Positive and negative to everything. Personally fuck diets and fuck bodybuilding, the sore joints, the walking like a hod carrier, the narcissist tendencies, the body dismorphia, counting macros, body part splits, etc -

Just go lift weights, do some cardio and cut back on the shit food.
